This thread is merely to peak my curiosity and to hopefully unshield myself from my snippets of ignorance regarding the world of Obsidia.
To me, Obsidia is an enormous 4GB world on a an old i5 with 8GB RAM. We're lucky we run the entire server on an SSD (supremely faster than your standard harddrive). If it was the only world, it'd be fine. But it's not. You guys beg and beg for a dynamic server where you can do everything you want, and I've spawned hemorrhoids giving it to you as best I can.
Anyway, without suggesting or revealing anything to complicate and veer off the topic of this thread, I'll ask you guys some questions.
Please answer the following two groups of questions as no more than two paragraphs for each group. Keep it precise with only relevant detail, answering the questions as best you can. Please do not write an essay.
For you, what is Darkspin?
What makes Darkspin what it is?
What are your favourite qualities of Darkspin?
What about Obsidia, do you love the most?
What will you miss about it?
Why would removing Obsidia be a problem?
Be completely honest:
Why do you think I want Asyr to replace Obsidia as the primary world?
What do you think of Asyr?
What do you even KNOW about Asyr?
Now please answer the following questions individually, with no more than one paragraph. Please do not write an essay.

If we were to remove Obsidia, what would you want in it's place?
Despite it's size, would you want a complete download of Obsidia in the event of it being removed?
Given I'm actually asking all these questions, can you trust me to handle the situation as best I can, with everyone's best interests in mind? I have a dream that is Asyr and Darkspin is my stage. If I remain the director of this server, it will be my concern. Otherwise, I can focus my efforts on an entirely new server which will most likely replace Darkspin as you know it, to save costs, rather than start a new one elsewhere.

Please copy the questions to your reply and answer them as requested. Keep it coherent and to the point.

For you, what is Darkspin?

I've been playing on Darkspin for quite a while now, and although not as long as some people, I can definitely say the greatest part about the server is it's community. Whether they be funny, helpful, intelligent, you name it, the server has a wide variety of players of which make the server itself fun. I am not in any way trying to say that you, Major's, or Darkspin's actions don't benefit the server, but the player-base is definitely what catches the players first.

What about Obsidia, do you love the most?
What will you miss about it?
Why would removing Obsidia be a problem?
Obsidia is so familiar, to all of our current players. There's the occasional new building that's made, but for the most part, you recognize every building. Having been in this world for so long, I don't imagine people would adapt so quickly to a new world. To suddenly have the world of which they've contributed so much to scrapped(not as in deleted, but taken out), and put into a new world with new systems, new mechanics, completely new layouts, etc.
Be completely honest:
Why do you think I want Asyr to replace Obsidia as the primary world?
What do you think of Asyr?
What do you even KNOW about Asyr?
It seems that Obsidia has had it's run. It's aged, griefed, and is in need of replacement. Or so I assume, is your reason. I really like the concept of Asyr, but I've been skeptical as to how the players will like it. It's far more vast and complicated, compared to original old minecraft of which obsida was built off of. Asyr has changed a lot, from what I've seen, during the development. I'm not even entirely sure how it'll end up. Regrettably, I have not made any effort to help in the production of Asyr, and have, if anything, helped postpone it more.
If we were to remove Obsidia, what would you want in it's place?
While I do like Obsidia, I feel we're in need of something new for a change, because of how old Obsidia is. I don't typically "play", but if I were to, I would be looking for something more complex than vanilla minecraft, but not too complex. Something that's easy to adapt to. I'm indecisive so I couldn't really specify anything I want.
Despite it's size, would you want a complete download of Obsidia in the event of it being removed?
Not really. I can understand why some people would want as much, due to the amount of time they've put into the server and it's buildings, but in reality, it was made on a video game, so it is very temporary, and that's something we'd have to live with.

Given I'm actually asking all these questions, can you trust me to handle the situation as best I can, with everyone's best interests in mind? I have a dream that is Asyr and Darkspin is my stage. Yeah, I understand. I definitely think we don't respect what you do for the server, and we're quick to swat down any ideas that seem new and too far out.
Comments
All I can say, is that I'm still looking forward to the release of Asyr, and I would like to actually help somewhat, rather than being counterproductive.

I just feel the need to ask some questions about Asyr before answering the actual questions. I want to have all the facts.
How big is the size for Asyr?
Has anything actually happened there other than the Sky Kingdom?
Do we really need Acheron anymore? I see very few people on Acheron anymore.
I'm sorry for not answering yet, but I just want to have everything to consider. I'll answer the first set now though:
I see Darkspin as a group of people I enjoy being with. Wether hanging around with Geist and Mikey or just building something ugly, I enjoy being here. The players make the Darkspin Server what it is. Without people to go on, the server would be for nothing. While all of the management and money is needed, without people there to play, why do it? I enjoy the towns and kingdom that Darkspin features. Personally, I'd like to see more raiding/PVP/wars, but I guess that will all be a part of Asyr.
Sorry about not copy pasting. I'm on my iPod and I can't do it really.

I pretty much agree with all that Mikey has said, but something that I suggest is that when Asyr is implemented, I think that you should keep Obsidia running for a little while until very few people play it, and then you can scrap it. (Don't know if everyone will agree)
But yeah, Obsidia is one hell of a mess in places, and it'd be good to have a new world, a fresh start. I support seeing Asyr as the new main world.
Eleves, this isn't about Acheron, it's not the issue here.

To me, Darkspin has been my favorite Minecraft server I've ever played on. I believe what makes Darkspin what it is, is how simple it is. My favorite qualities are that it plays like vanilla Minecraft while still giving plugins that assist while not changing the experience too much, and the fact that I have a lot of friends here now. In terms of Obsidia, I love how..... free it feels. I'll miss everything I've built, but most of all I'll miss how simple it feels, while still feeling like I'll never run out of things to do. The problem with removing Obsidia would be that, it would feel like the server is missing something for a long time, and I think it would take time for that feeling to go away for some.
I feel that you want to replace Obsidia with Asyr because you feel that Obsidia is not only inadequate, but that Asyr is your dream world. So far my thoughts on Asyr are that it will be too different from Obsidia for some of our members to make the transition. What I know about Asyr is that having nations or factions is intended (don't know if still is), and that you want it to be custom generated. The main thing I don't like is custom generation, I never have. With custom generation, I feel things can always be missed (I truly hope you are putting spawners out there.) Also one thing I like about minecraft generation is finding a place to live. With minecraft generation, there will always be a few good spots, but with custom I feel that's lost, since you want to make so many "good" locations.

If Obsidia were removed, I would like a world like it in it's place, one that's not custom generated, and allows people to be as creative as they want in a survival environment. I understand Obsidia is old, and maybe that's why you want it removed, but I still love playing in Obsidia. So maybe a new world with the same idea wouldn't be a bad idea, but people would still hate losing everything. In terms of a download, I'd probably download it, just so I wouldn't feel like it's completely gone.
I trust you to handle the situation as best you can, I only wish you'd look more from a player's perspective at times. Not to say you don't at all, but I think you need to do it more often. Other than that, with your work ethic I think you can do fine.

Humans... Worthless creatures. One day they shall face my judgement... - Bass.EXE
That's exactly what we're trying to do with Asyr. But we've needed more help in deciding how that'll be done. I dunno, perhaps the less people we have planning/designing it, the less complex it'll be. We have Chris on board now too.
Eleves, your questions are not relevant to this thread. I'll answer that stuff in another thread in the near future.
You do realize that that was my exact plan from the very start, ever since I first released plans for a new world...?
Precisely. And while I do care about our regulars, the mess of the world has made it difficult to attract new players.. you know, ones that aren't friends of already active regulars.
For awhile, I've understood that, so I never wanted Asyr to be too different. Yes, there will be more to do and you'll need to learn the commands of some new plugins and little about how they work. But take a moment and count all the plugins on the server that you know the commands for and use every session. There are actually quite a few really. And for some reason, you guys seem to think an extra plugin or two will make it too complicated.
The whole concept of NPCs was solely to keep the server simple. All you do is walk up to them and they start talking to you, telling you everything you need to know about everything.. well that was the initial plan anyway. But either way, they'll be used for quests and stuff. But the biggest issue there, is Major is the one scripting them and he's happy to do it, but he needs ideas. So please Skype him, he'll be happy to share all that he has done and can do so you can go ahead and think of how to take advantage. Above all, we need ideas.
Well guess what?
I'm so concerned about missing vital mechanics of the game, that I have asked Major to go to great lengths to come up with work arounds. And what really pisses me off with Acheron, is we can place hundreds of brilliant temples around the world, randomly (but intelligently) placed and with a variety of several dozen unique designs.... but those chests? we currently have no way of spawning items in them.
Composer, I think you above all, should have a session with Major and I so we can show you Asyr. Download Teamviewer and we'll plan it.
But yes. I'm really concerned about leaving out important mechanics and features that the standard MC generator provides.
In the event that we actually do remove Obsidia, a new world will be created in it's place. But only after I've exhausted all options for keeping the world. I personally love the idea of a new start. I think what has made it difficult for you guys in this scenario, is you think it'll be replaced only by Asyr and foriegn, complicated mechanics. Actually, I'm happy to create a new Obsidia which will be no different from the current one, only newly generated; a fresh start, a fresh world with less glitches and bugs and no more fugly chunk misalignment.
Sure, Asyr is finite, but it's enormous. I could be wrong, but I think it's about the size of Obsidia today, minus all those branches. It's not so much about creating lots of great land formations and whatnot, Major has been creating his own custom biomes. Take a moment to let that sink in.
I'm sure our ore concentration ideas will pop up somewhere in these replies.. I'm just going through them one by one and replying to each.
Yes, we have some rather interesting ideas for the ore concentration. Whether you like them or not, we aren't entirely sure. But the problem is we've only really had negative feedback, but merely at the idea. And currently, it merely IS just an idea. Major has already implemented some higher ore concentration in places, but the overall concentration and whether some ores are only found in certain biomes/locations... has not been decided yet. (I swear to fish, it'll be nothing like the centre of Acheron)
We need feedback and ideas.

For you, what is Darkspin?
What makes Darkspin what it is?
What are your favourite qualities of Darkspin?
Aside from the awesome staff and community, I think building and creative works make Darkspin what it is, and it is definitely my favourite aspect of the server.
What about Obsidia, do you love the most?
What will you miss about it?
Why would removing Obsidia be a problem?
Obsidia carries a lot of server history. Among all of the garbage and outdated world generation, there are some really good creations on it that hold memories to the community.
Be completely honest:
Why do you think I want Asyr to replace Obsidia as the primary world?
What do you think of Asyr?
What do you even KNOW about Asyr?
I understand that Asyr is a world that adds focus on factions and pvp, but still providing neutral factions for players not wanting to take part in pvp. I believe that you want to replace Obsidia with Asyr so players can have a more updated world to play on, and also cater for pvp-oriented players. Even though it will take time to adapt to, I'm in full support of your decision.
If we were to remove Obsidia, what would you want in it's place?
I'd personally like to see a survival world that's focused on building and creativity, and still having a towns and economy system like Obsidia. It would provide an alternative to creative mode for players who want to do a bit more work for their creations.
Despite it's size, would you want a complete download of Obsidia in the event of it being removed?
Having a download of the world would give sense of security to players, allow them to still be able to access their creations somehow. Assuming it wouldn't be difficult to host, I personally would like a download of Obsidia if it were to be removed from the server.
I appreciate all of the work you do for the server, and I do understand that you have the community's best interests in mind. Even though the changes will take some adapting to, an updated world is definitely needed. I trust that you can handle this situation well, and am looking forward to what you have planned for the future of this server.
Guys, I need more feedback... from more people.
For you, what is Darkspin?
darkspin is like an orphanage to me. it's full of children and i want to help it, but its so loud and rowdy that its hard to do so.
What makes Darkspin what it is?
The staff, the freedom and the overall feel of obsidia. It was much different to any other server i'd been on, and it drew me in. Not sure what about it, but it just feels more relaxed.
What are your favourite qualities of Darkspin?
Read above.
What about Obsidia, do you love the most?
Just the feeling it has, the interconnectivity of most of the aspects of it form a sandbox-like play. The lack of need to actually harvest ingredients, but the ability to harvest whatever you want to acquire what you need is nice. The freedom to create a town, and manage it to the best of your ability, and the general teamwork that is involved with any grinding that is to happen, without the chance of someone killing you and taking your things.
What will you miss about it?
The nostalgia that is formed when i log on.
Why would removing Obsidia be a problem?
The old times of the server would be lost. The history of what has happened, and the treasures left by certain memebers are invaluable. For instance, the core, and a bedrock home i found of carvergirl's below epicville. Its simply too inquisive of a place to lose.
Be completely honest:
Why do you think I want Asyr to replace Obsidia as the primary world?
because honestly, you made it sound like exactly that.
What do you think of Asyr?
hell of a place, but it can't replace home (obsidia)
What do you even KNOW about Asyr?
That its supposed to completely change what the server looks like, and that is not always entirely good.
Now please answer the following questions individually, with no more than one paragraph. Please do not write an essay.
If we were to remove Obsidia, what would you want in it's place?
Obsidia. plain and simple.
Despite it's size, would you want a complete download of Obsidia in the event of it being removed?
no, i'd want a month to explore it fully before it was removed.
some key area's i'd like.
Given I'm actually asking all these questions, can you trust me to handle the situation as best I can, with everyone's best interests in mind? I have a dream that is Asyr and Darkspin is my stage. If I remain the director of this server, it will be my concern. Otherwise, I can focus my efforts on
an entirely new server which will most likely replace Darkspin as you know it, to save costs, rather than start a new one elsewhere.
i always trusted you to make the big decisions, but i lacked the faith that your 'smaller' less game changing decisions were wise or relevant, like they were just wasting time. Nonetheless, you did a good job, even if some things had to be removed, replaced or changed. (part of this was the towny thing, you probably should have ran it by more people and given it a bit of time before installing it, however i still entirely blame zahn for being a pest).
