It'd be nice if there were some way we could smelt our weapons, armor, and tools to get the base items back...

He wants it so that you can "uncraft" an item. It's a very nive idea, however, it can be abused. Say you have a half-broken diamond pick. Normally, it would cost a diamond to repair it. However, with this, you could just "recycle" it, and than recraft it for free.

So, for me, it's a no. Nice idea though.
