I have a story to tale. It's a little story I like to call "How you Fuck Up a Successful Server for Dummies". The first part of this story begins on a tf2 server. On this tf2 server, people who were not part of the "in" crowd were picked on/trolled/used as punching bags for admin abuse/etc. Caution was given to this server by someone saying this would lead to the death of the server, as eventually the people who actually liked the server would leave, and no new blood would join, as they would have either already been pissed off, or been warned by word of mouth the abuse. The person who gave that advice was ignored, and the server slowly faded into obscurity, as predicted.
Part two of this story is more tragic. See this part is about a minecraft server. Unlike the first server, this server was well managed, new members were welcomed into the fold, and the community for the most part was helpful. Staff was only added if they were trusted by the majority of the already known good members of the community, instead of added on the whim of a single person. As a result of this well management, when players left, new players were almost always there to take place because it was a welcoming and fun environment, unlike the first part of this story. Sure sometimes player count would get low during certain times, but there was still a strong core of players that kept it going until more players came in, because the server gave the core a sense of loyalty. Unfortunately, a tragic mistake was made one day. In one of the biggest actions of stupidity I have ever seen, the head on the server was removed by the owner because of paranoia. Suddenly, the core, the staff, the lifeblood of the community no longer had a sense of loyalty to the server anymore. The person they saw as their head was, in their eyes, unjustly removed. As such, these players left. So a new staff needed to be added quickly. Unfortunately because of this, bad seeds took important roles out of necessity. The same mistakes of the first part of our story began to repeat themselves. Admin abuse and a general lack of common sense led to the destruction of the chance of any new players. And as the players that remained grew bored, there was no one left to replace them.
And that my friends is "How to Fuck Up a Successful Server for Dummies". Do you want to know what the two servers in our story had in common? They both shared the name darkspin. Thank you all, you're a great crowd.
