Darkspin is basically dead...

The fact that all of you managed to see this and respond astounds me in all honesty, unless you get sent email notifications or some shit which i'm unaware of, it just baffles me that so many of our community still hang around as if hoping for a return.

You look like you're going to spend your life having one epiphany after another, always thinking you've finally figured out what's holding you back, and how you can finally be productive and creative and turn your life around; but nothing will ever change; that cycle of mediocrity isn't due to some obstacle, it's who you are.

Well, I'm largely just admin on the forums lately anyway. I'm still OP on the MC server, but that's the only one that's still up, and I haven't really been actively involved in it. The forums are really the only part of DS that I'm still "active" in

I have a story to tale. It's a little story I like to call "How you Fuck Up a Successful Server for Dummies". The first part of this story begins on a tf2 server. On this tf2 server, people who were not part of the "in" crowd were picked on/trolled/used as punching bags for admin abuse/etc. Caution was given to this server by someone saying this would lead to the death of the server, as eventually the people who actually liked the server would leave, and no new blood would join, as they would have either already been pissed off, or been warned by word of mouth the abuse. The person who gave that advice was ignored, and the server slowly faded into obscurity, as predicted.

Part two of this story is more tragic. See this part is about a minecraft server. Unlike the first server, this server was well managed, new members were welcomed into the fold, and the community for the most part was helpful. Staff was only added if they were trusted by the majority of the already known good members of the community, instead of added on the whim of a single person. As a result of this well management, when players left, new players were almost always there to take place because it was a welcoming and fun environment, unlike the first part of this story. Sure sometimes player count would get low during certain times, but there was still a strong core of players that kept it going until more players came in, because the server gave the core a sense of loyalty. Unfortunately, a tragic mistake was made one day. In one of the biggest actions of stupidity I have ever seen, the head on the server was removed by the owner because of paranoia. Suddenly, the core, the staff, the lifeblood of the community no longer had a sense of loyalty to the server anymore. The person they saw as their head was, in their eyes, unjustly removed. As such, these players left. So a new staff needed to be added quickly. Unfortunately because of this, bad seeds took important roles out of necessity. The same mistakes of the first part of our story began to repeat themselves. Admin abuse and a general lack of common sense led to the destruction of the chance of any new players. And as the players that remained grew bored, there was no one left to replace them.

And that my friends is "How to Fuck Up a Successful Server for Dummies". Do you want to know what the two servers in our story had in common? They both shared the name darkspin. Thank you all, you're a great crowd.

Surprised that this thread got so popular. But Composer is right (about the mc server, I like never came onto tf2 so I wouldn't know). Minecraft Darkspin was a very strong server for many years, especially for being such a small one.

But one small mistake changed EVERYTHING. One bad, quickly made decision and it was all basically over. DS was ruined. No one may have thought of that at the time, but it all began to seep in later on. And just like that, a once wonderful, amazing server wilted into a crappy mess.

This is probably the major thing I disagree with. It may have been a good idea to simply talk things out with Viper rather than immediately cut off SSH/Admin from him, but at the same time, he did seem to be trying to replace the DS TF2 server. I don't think DS was paranoid, just a bit rash at the most. This is also coming from someone who heard much more of Ryu/DS's side, but I also know that DS isn't the type to just be totally unreasonable. At the very least, it's been grossly oversimplified by both sides, who gathered so much animosity toward one another that there was never a real conversation about it.

I also understand why admin behavior on TF2 was pretty infamous to the MC players, but there's also a fundamental difference between the two games. In MC, admin abuse could lead to lost items that took hours to collect/make, or destruction of buildings that people invested weeks into. In TF2, though, nothing was really lost if an admin killed in buddha, slayed, etc. I think it certainly got out of hand at several points, and response to these abuses were pretty often delayed and a bit forgiving, but I don't agree with the amount of hatred it seems to get from the majority of the former MC players.

Wait. What the hell? Why is this still being talked about? I thought we resolved this.

EDIT: I guess I'll explain myself and what happened one last time, as annoying as this topic has become. (Seriously though. Why again?? WHY.)

I know everyone was hurt and there was a split but some of you seem to have forgotten why and my side of the story was majorly ignored despite me being there when it happened. I was there to allow you all to take your hate out onto me, rather than DS, because he didn't deserve it either. Instead, people hated EVERYONE. There was so much hate being slung around, it was ridiculous. It was assumptions piled upon baseless accusations wrapped up into blatant insults. The administrative team (no matter what side they chose) did a good job of trying to keep things orderly and respectful, I think. The nonsense even went as far as to grief either side in petty last-remarks, which were completely unnecessary.

Here's what went down on D-Day: Viper asked for my help. I said sure. I was excited and honored to help such an important person. He asked me to become exclusive to his server. I declined. I explained that I would help out both. He insisted. I declined again and asked DS to talk with him about forming a partnership. DS jumped the gun and removed his SSH access (I kept saying some of his admin because he still had access to his basic admin commands) and he threw a huge fit. Both sides felt completely insulted by the other's behavior. It blew up from there.

Seriously. That's it. That's all that happened in a nutshell. It just grew and grew because of the resentment everyone felt for one another for their own little reasons. That's childishness, imo. I learned from my mistakes that I made with Composer and we both apologized to each other. We're friends now. Why are we bringing back up such a painful time for us all? Old wounds shouldn't be picked at but remembered. Agree to disagree and move on.

For whatever reason you believe the DS servers have died, I have actually been in contact with DS personally, so I know why. Stop making assumptions and just ask someone who might know, for crying out loud.

Reason: DS has been going through some rough stuff IRL and he hasn't really had the time to focus on the servers, so he's decided to take a break. I have no clue how long it will last but it could be permanent. I just want you guys to put your selfishness aside for a moment to try and realize that DS offered us all a FREE place to stay. A community to meet friends and hang out and he didn't ask anything. He did this to make us all happy and I don't think someone like that could ever deserve so much hate.

Instead of feeling bad, you should all be thankful for those moments that we did have together. We made a lot of friends we wouldn't have had without DS.

I guess I'll amend my statement here a bit and say Viper being removed was the catalyst for the server's decline, but I'm not certain as to what led to his removal, seeing as I was not there. All I know is Viper told me he wasn't trying to steal away darkspin's player base (or something along those lines, its only been a long time since this crap happened), and I choose to believe him cause he's earned my trust. Thus, me believing there was some paranoia/rashness in darkspin's decision. Maybe rash is better than paranoia, but alas only darkspin knows for sure himself and I'd personally rather not but him about it, as it solves nothing now.

I'd say more on why the tf2 server admin abuse got under my skin, but its an old battle that can be dropped at this point. I'll just mention two events that altered my opinion majorly was when someone noticed my clan tag on another server and had a negative opinion of me to start because of it, and when one of my friends joined the server while I was not on and apparently got abused. Remember, I was a tf2 member before MC.

I guess that's sort of where I'm at, too; I've never had any reason to distrust DS, and not knowing Viper, I can't really speak to his honesty. And yeah, I can definitely see people having negative opinions of DS players. The server could get a little... Rough. Heh. Even without admins on, it was usually just a spawncamp party. I've actually seen it on a few server blacklists people have posted, and a particularly scathing reddit comment.
I guess my sourness with the mention of the TF2 server isn't necessarily that I'm offended, it's more just because it feels like the only time I've spoken with you/seen you post, it seems like it's just you bashing the server. I think that's more my inattentiveness than it is you, though.

I have no idea what happened because I was banned for whatever reason, speaking of which I finally found out who banned me.

If anyone has any personal friendships with Geekboy, ask him why he banned me. I've been longing for an answer for years and it's because of that which lead to my wonders about what the hell happened during my absence.

Also I see practically no chance of rebuilding the mc database for ds, it would take a lot of effort to convince SOME people to actually come back.

Still clinging onto that tiny thread of hope, until it finally snaps and everything comes crashing down into the endless void, never to be seen again.
